The SD Lady Knights’ soccer team could not have given a better effort in the showdown finale of the IHSAA 2A Sectional against East Central Monday night. Emotions ran high right from the start, as the starters from both teams held hands during the pre game announcement concerning the tragic death of EC boys’ soccer player Jacob Amberger. They continued their show of unity through the singing of the National Anthem before heading to their respective sidelines to start the game. Both teams came out with great intensity and played good, clean, hard-nosed soccer through a scoreless first half. The game appeared headed for overtime as it was still scoreless until EC knocked in a goal with 19.2 seconds remaining in regulation to win 1-0.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the SD girls, but their show of sportsmanship, class and concern, evidenced by the pre game ritual and the JA 17 wristbands that were worn, is something that will live on in the memories of all in attendance. We are very proud of you, ladies, for representing SD with class and dignity both on and off the field of play.
