The South Dearborn cheerleading squad competed in the Indiana Association of School Principals state preliminary cheerleading competition Saturday at Pendleton Heights High School. With fifteen teams competing in the 3A varsity division, the team placed in the top nine to quality for next weekend’s cheerleading state finals for the first time in school history. Coach Cook, Coach Slack, and crew surpassed the team goal scoring a total of 223 points. The team is judged in four categories: dance and formation; tumbling; dance, stunts, and pyramids; and jumps and cheer. After an intense week of last minute touch ups, second year head coach Heather Cook gave the team one last piece of advice to “leave it all out on the mat.” The squad started preparing the competition routine in March working through the summer and into the fall. The routine was choreographed by a National Cheerleading Association dance/cheer professional. The IASP Cheerleading State Finals will take place on Saturday, November 3 at Southport High School.
