The junior varsity wrestling season got under way Monday night with a dual meet against future EIAC opponent Connersville. SD went head to head with the Spartans for a total of 20 matches and came out on the winning side of 13 of them. The Knights got off to a fast start with a fall from freshman Nathan Boggs, quickly followed by another pin by Caleb Robbins. After a couple tough losses, the Knights rattled off wins in the next 6 matches, 3 by pin and 3 by decision. Dalton Cisco pinned his opponent in his first match ever, as did sophomore Will Berry. Andrew Hilton was next, gutting out an 8-6 victory. Josh Hines followed with a 12-6 win. Logan Hyatt was the fifth consecutive victor for SD, also getting a pin before Mac Espedilla won 10-5. The Knights then dropped three in a row before getting back to their winning ways when Darrel Walker hung on for a 10-9 win and Boggs got his second pin of the evening. After back-to-back losses, SD ended on another positive streak, winning their last three with a second fall by Berry, a gritty 6-4 overtime win by Daemon Lane and a 2nd period pin by Brad Bruner.
The varsity squad opens Thursday night at Rushville and then wrestles 4 times Saturday at Milan. Wrestling on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am.
