South Dearborn debuted their new championship course on Thursday with a dual meet against Rising Sun.
The girl’s race was contested first with SD freshman Brooke Rohe taking the runner-up spot behind the Shiners’ Kasey Baker. Coach Jeremy Baney said of Rohe’s race, “Brooke took it out well below her target pace for the day as did most of our girls. That early pace effected them later in the race, but I would rather see that than taking it too slow. Up through the 2K, Brooke was only 100 meters behind Baker, which I didn’t expect.”
All six SD girls finished in the top eight, scoring 21 points to Rising Sun’s 37.

5th Shelby Beil
8th Samantha Sinclair
Coach Baney added, “I am extremely pleased with our effort tonight under less than ideal conditions. I didn’t know what to expect from our girls or theirs. We have a large learning curve. The good thing about that is, however, there is going to be some fun in watching these girls improve throughout the season.”
In the boy’s race, senior Chris Weissmann had a gutsy performance against Rising Sun junior Trevor Levi. Weissmann stated after the race, “I just tried to hang out behind him and tried to sprint past him at the end.” The tactic worked as Weissmann ran past Levi with approximately 50 meters to the finish.
Coach Baney commented, “Chris is defending EIAC Champion. He got sick three days later and didn’t fully recover in time for Sectional and Regional. He was disappointed with how the 2015 season ended. His fitness level is extremely high right now, and he has something to prove.”
SD’s top seven placed in the top nine in the meet, outscoring Rising Sun 19 to 42.
